Read about this meeting from Jonathan Falwell that he had with Arab leaders in Washington. He details some pretty frank discussions from both sides and the potential outcomes from this meeting.
Historically the Arab world has always been in turmoil dating back to the Old Testament with the sons of Abraham (Issac & Ishmael). The Jewish tradition follows the linage of Issac and the Muslim tradition traces its roots to Ishmael. Even within the Muslim community itself there are factional disputes that bring violence and chaos to the larger Arab world. This will not be a problem fixed quickly and in reality it may never be changed at all.
The war in Iraq & the larger war on Terrorism are just the most current example of the complexities that this ideological struggle has presented. I agree that a new definition for success needs to be defined in the fight for Iraq, but as a former Marine, I think that we must continue to defer to our commanders on the ground to determine what that success looks like. We cannot allow ambitious politicians in Congress to use our troops as pawns in some sick political game. Let them do their job and give them the tools they need to do it so they can come home knowing that they completed the mission. The more I think about our Constitution and the men who wrote it (in light of the current situation) I am amazed at how smart they were. It is no accident that the President is the Commander and Chief and that one voice sets the course of action for our nations military. Our founding fathers knew that giving that power to a single authority would be much less political than trying to get a divided Congress to speak with one voice that is in the nation’s best interest. I applaud the President for making the decision to try and protect this country and having the courage to finish the job regardless of his poll numbers. History will be the most accurate judge of his policies and performance and we will all have to wait more that a week to see what the results show.
As a Christian our most powerful weapon in this continued struggle is prayer. Pray for our leaders (regardless of party affiliation) & pray for the men and women who every day get up and protect our way of life while trying to bring peace to a region of the world who does not know what it looks like. Every loss is personal, every injury changes the lives of individuals and families and we all need to thank our military heroes as they return home to us.
