Democrats Want Your 401k Money!

Posted by mattshultz on October 28, 2008

Read this story about sweeping new proposals from Democrats should Obama win that would impact your 401k retirement savings. This is just further proof that Obama and the Democrats are socialists who believe that government is the answer to all of America’s problems.

Democrats are Wrong and So is Danielle Swanson

Posted by mattshultz on October 21, 2008

(My response to an editorial in the Daily-Tribune today)

A small price to pay
Danielle Swanson: Staff Writer, The Daily Tribune Cartersville Georgia

With the introduction of Joe the Plumber to the debate last week, John McCain brought up what he sees as a plague to the American small businessman. Joe and thousands like him, he argued, will not be able to buy their dream businesses because of Barack Obama’s planned tax increases. This will cause our whole nation to go in a spiral and make our economy sink lower, rather than higher — a trickle down of increased poverty.

Joe The Plumber hit a nerve I think!

Gimme a break.

The truth is that singles making $200,000  &  Couples making $250,000 will pay higher taxes under Obama’s plan. Almost 50% of small businesses in the United States makes this level of income and these people file it under their personal income taxes making them eligible for the Obama tax increase.

Obama’s plan does not add some huge new tax to the top 5 percent. It simply takes away the cut that President Bush gave them, putting them back to the tax rates of the Clinton years. Plenty of businesses were started during that time.

This is not the governments money! “It simply takes away the cut”…is just further proof that Democrats do not believe that that you should keep the money you earn. The government should decide how much you need. How does that sound to you?

In fact, according to data from the Small Business Administration, 5.9 million new businesses opened while Clinton was in office, with 1998 seeing a record 898,000 new businesses created. During 2005, under President Bush and the tax cuts, only 671,800 new businesses opened. Seems like those tax cuts didn’t help that many plumbers.

Of course new businesses will open regardless of who wins. The issue is how many people will they be able to employ.  More taxes and more burdensome regulation by Obama will lead to fewer jobs being created by these small business owners. It will also lead to more corporate failure and more U.S. businesses moving operations overseas to escape his projected increase in the capital gains tax rate.

Obama argues that many of those new businesses will be helped by his tax cuts. Only 5 percent of Americans will see an increase, and from the information I’ve found, compared with the rest of us, they can afford to pay.

It is this very 5% that are the leaders in job creation in this country. “Poor” people never go to another “poor” person to get a job! I spoke with a small business owner recently who is already having to let people go. What will happen if his tax rate goes up?

Currently, the top 20 percent of wealthiest Americans hold 84 percent of the nation’s wealth; the top 1 percent holds almost 40 percent by themselves. That means that the other 80 percent of Americans hold only 16 percent of wealth.

Danielle you need to remember that this is not the “Nation’swealth.  That money was earned by the collective group of  individual citizens that live in the United States. Whatever we earn belongs to us as individuals not the government. Honestly I do not care how much money someone makes. Let them keep more of theirs and let me keep more of mine whatever that equates to.  I feel a whole lot better giving that money to my church and letting them help people than I do sending more to Washington.

Bush’s policies have added to that inequality — while the top 1 percent was experiencing income growth of 11 percent, the bottom 99 percent had less than 1 percent of growth per year from 2002-2006. Yes, some of this money may “trickle down” as the Republicans believe, but many more are left standing with their umbrella waiting for a flood that’s never coming. Even while they are taking billion dollar buyout deals from the government, reports of Wall Street fat cats partying it up on our dollars are surfacing. It seems like they can afford to lose that tax cut.

“Trickle Down” economics has worked under Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush. The problem is that the Congress under both the Republican and Democratic party has not kept spending under control.

In reality, the tax cuts to the rich probably never should have been given in the first place. Bush was the first president in history to make such a cut during wartime. There’s a reason that past presidents hadn’t cut taxes while our nation was at war: fighting in another country takes a lot of money! As we spend billions down the pipeline to Iraq, we need at least some sort of income as a country. Even me, as little economic education as I have, understand that if we’re spending more in one area, than we either need to cutback in another area or increase revenue.

“Tax cuts to the rich should never be given”……It is not your money!  A better answer would be to eliminate all federal taxes and move to a consumption based tax system like the FairTax. The editor of Kiplinger magazine said recently that the best way for this country to move out of this recession is to implement a consumption tax system.

But you don’t have to take my word for it – ask the U.S. Treasury. According to a Washington Post article in 2006, the treasury said that the country either needed to revoke the tax cuts or decrease spending to protect the economy.

Finally we agree…Decrease Spending.

In the ideal world, none of us would have to pay any taxes. It’s not fun having the government take our hard earned dollars. But I like having roads to drive on, schools for my children to attend, the knowledge that I’m safe and free. And hey, if that cost me a few dollars, it’s worth it.

Democrats only answer is to take from one group of people and redistribute that money to another group.  This class warfare and wealth envy is killing this country and it putting us on a path towards Socialism at an alarming rate.  We need to stop punishing people for being successful and implement a tax code that treats all people equally.  This could be accomplished by the FairTax but it would strip the Democrats of their control of people in the lower economic tiers. Obama continually refers to the fact that he is giving 95% of Americans a tax cut under his plan. This amazes me since the bottom 48% pay no income taxes.  His plan is designed to “Spread The Wealth” in this country and payoff that bottom 48% so they will continue to be loyal to the Democratic party.

Stayin Alive Can Keep You Alive

Posted by mattshultz on October 17, 2008

The Bee Gee’s may just save your life. The song “Stayin Alive” in Saturday Night Fever has 103 beats per minute, which is roughly equivalent to the 100 compressions per minute recommended by the American Heart Association for CPR.

Researchers at the University of Illinois had 15 students and doctors perform compressions on mannequins with the song’s beat. Five weeks later, they did the same drill without listening to the song. Participants reported they felt more confident with the song and their technique did not suffer.

Officials say the study shows the song helped people who already know how to do CPR and the results are promising enough to warrant further studies with real patients or untrained people. The results will be presented at an American College of Emergency Physicians Meeting next month.

Joe The Plumber: Obama Tax Plan ‘Infuriates Me’

October 16, 2008 2:46 AM

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports:

John McCain may have found a blue-collar face to help him argue that no American — not even the richest 5 percent — should pay higher taxes.

“Joe The Plumber” has weighed in on Wednesday’s presidential debate and he says that Barack Obama’s tax plan “infuriates me.”

“To be honest with you, that infuriates me,” plumber Joe Wurzelbacher told Nightline’s Terry Moran. “It’s not right for someone to decide you made too much—that you’ve done too good and now we’re going to take some of it back.”

“That’s just completely wrong,” he added.

Wurzelbacher, who says no one from the McCain campaign got in touch with him before Wednesday, was a centerpiece of the third and final presidential debate.

The plumber’s brush with fame began on Sunday when he confronted Barack Obama outside of Toledo, Ohio. Wurzelbacher challenged the Democratic candidate on his plan to raise taxes on the top five percent of earners — a policy which would, by the Obama campaign’s own estimation, mean higher taxes for 184,000 small businesses.

“I’m getting ready to buy a company that makes 250 to 280 thousand dollars a year,” Wurzelbacher told Obama. “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?”

Under Obama’s plan, individuals making more than $200,000 per year, or couples making more than $250,000 per year, would pay higher taxes on income, capital gains, and dividends. Starting ten years from now, Obama supports an additional 2-4 percent tax on individual income above $250,000 per year to help shore up the Social Security system.

To evaluate how Wurzelbacher and his wife would fare under Obama, one would need to know his wife’s income (if any) plus what the plumber meant when he told Obama that the company he is getting ready to buy “makes” $250,000 – $280,000 per year.

Was Wurzelbacher referring to gross revenue or net profits?

Obama’s higher taxes on small businesses would be leveled against those whose net profits exceed $250,000 per year, according to Obama’s campaign.

While at least 184,000 small businesses would face higher taxes under Obama, the Illinois Democrat is also proposing a series of tax credits that could aid small businesses.

Obama has proposed a $3,000 tax credit for every new job that companies create in the United States over the next two years, a small business health tax credit on up to 50 percent of employee premiums paid by employers, and elimination of capital gains taxes on investments in small and start-up businesses.

Regardless of how Wurzelbacher would personally fare under the candidates’ plans, he suggested to ABC News’ Nightline that he is against all forms of progressive taxation.

During his telephone interview with ABC News, the Ohio plumber argued that the government should not tax some more than others and argued that this principle should extend not only to Americans at his income-level but also to the world’s richest man.

“I don’t like it,” said Wurzelbacher. “You know, me or — you know, Bill Gates, I don’t care who you are. If you worked for it, if it was your idea, and you implemented it, it’s not right for someone to decide you made too much.”

Miracle on Mt. Moriah

Posted by mattshultz on October 14, 2008

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to spend time with family in the mountains of North Georgia. On Sunday my sister-in-law Sonya brought a lesson from Beth Moore for us to listen to on Triumphs and Tests. We all go through difficult times in our lives and I think that these become the sign posts that help determine the path of our lives. The lesson that we studied was God’s instruction to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Read Genesis 22:1-19 for yourself.

The first thing you find in this story is that God tells us right from the beginning that he is testing Abraham.  In many cases if you think about your own life our most difficult tests involve the people that we love the most.  This is also true for Abraham and God acknowledges how much Abraham loves Isaac in verse 2.

In the the study materials Beth Moore makes the point that Obedience is not the hardest part of our most trying tests. Keeping the Faith can be hardest of all.

We see in verse 5 that Abraham has this faith because he tells his servents that he and and Isaac will return later.  He knew that God had told him that that his line shall be made possible through Isaac. He believed that God would have to intervene in this test to fulfill this earlier promise. As Abraham was ready to strike his son with the knife an angel of the Lord called out to him not to harm his son.  The Lord provided a ram as a substitute sacrifice for Isaac.  If you just read the story you might think that this is the miracle of the story but you would be wrong. The miracle of Mt. Moriah was that it forshadowed the coming of Jesus and his attonement for our sins.

This story is about a Fathers love for his child and the need for a substitute sacrifice for sin.  In this story the ram is the substitute sacrifice but Christ was the substitute sacrifice on calvary for all of our sins. God has a deep abiding love for each of us as his children and he had to provide a pathway for us to re-enter the kingdom of Heaven. He loved each of us so much that he sent HIS ONLY SON to be this mechinisim for our salvation. What greater proof do we need to understand God’s love for us? If you are a parent then you know the deep seeded love that a parent has for a child. God used his son and the story of Abraham on Mt. Moriah to touch something deep inside of us (especially parents) that we would understand that he wants all of us to fulfill our God ordained purpose and be with him in Heaven.

The Miracle of Mt. Moriah did not end on that mountain and it did not end with Jesus on Calvary. You can have this miracle in your own life by asking God to live in your heart and allowing Jesus to be your pathway back to The Father.  If you are already a Christian then I will tell you to be ready for the tests in your life but never forget that you don’t face it alone.  God tested Abraham to prepare him and Isaac for something greater.  We all need to let God direct our path and see what amazing journey he has planned for us!  Triumphs and Tests will occur along the way but what wonders await on the other side!

God loves you! Remember that the greater the tests in your life, The greater the reward God is planning for you!

The FairTax Is The Answer

Posted by mattshultz on October 9, 2008

I have thought a lot about what has happened to this country over the past few weeks and I have come to the conclusion that The Fair Tax is the answer to get us out of this economic crisis.  The FairTax would eliminate the capital gains taxes and income taxes and would allow the people to keep more of their money and use that money to re-invest in America.  Billions of dollars that has has been tax sheltered off of the shores of the United States would come back to work for our economy.  It is a pay as you go system that reaches every consumer in this country regardless of social class or country of origin.

Just take a look at your most recent paycheck and think what you could do with the money that you are sending to the government every pay period.  There is also a prebate that would come back to every family to cover the necessities of life.  Here is a FairTax calculator so that you can see how this game changing tax plan would impact your life.

The only way John McCain is going to win this election to come up with a dramatic plan to fix this economy and I submit to you that The Fair Tax is the answer! Here are some details about the Fair Tax:

What is the FairTax plan?

The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 1025) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax  administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

The FairTax:

  • Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
  • Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
  • Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
  • Allows American products to compete fairly
  • Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
  • Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
  • Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
  • Abolishes the IRS
  • The Fair Tax
